hello holland.!

i have a feature in the new issue of glamkult. if you are in holland and speak dutch ..... have a look.!

quickly study dutch or use google translator to read already a bit of the text here:

prison is a place / part 4

"without you"

some of the prisoners sent me photographs of them with their ex-girlfriends. They then asked me to remove their ex-girlfriends so that the photos could be resent to prospective girls friends.

prison is a place / part 3

After one year of writing, I asked the prisoners to draw a portrait of me, an imaginary portrait of how they thought I would look like.

here a few outcomes:

Prison is a place / part 2

I asked Joe to have his fellow prisoners represent the letter in one of his poems. He was to write each letter of the alphabet on a t-shirt and hand it to his inmates. They were then asked to model the shirts and subsequently polaroid pictures would be taken by the prison photographer. A different letter in every photo. I paid him two hundred dollars, wich was sent to cover the expenses of the materials. The cash was then placed in an aluminium wrap and posted to Joe´s mother, who would in turn transfer the money to Joe. Three months later I received a reply, but inside the envelope were just three Polaroid images with the letters: A, B and C. The only word i could compose was "CAB"....

I decided to beat them at their own game by telling Joe I could probably get two-hundred euros for every three letters of the eventual poem which consisted of sixty-one letters - could fetch up to 4066 dollars. Since one of the prisoners once told me that you can never get a 50 / 50 deal because that menat the one that proposes the deal must be a loser. I offered to split the cash in quarters and give 1/4 to the prisoners, keeping the other 3/4 for myself. Two weeks later I received all of the missing letters of the alphabet.

Prison is a place

Prison is a place where you write letters and can´t think of anything to say.

Four years ago I found a webpage called “Friends behind the Wall” that offers data of American prisoners looking for contact with the outside world by mail. I started to correspond with 34 Afro-American prisoners from different prisons in the United States. Since then I’ve collected over 300letters, drawings and photo’s, turning it into an archive of intense emotions.

These letters are documents of the communication between the prisoners and me.

This communication often led to a playful exchange of items like photographs, poems, song texts and drawings. By sending and receiving personal information, which was sometimes honest and sometimes false, it soon developed into a natural and unplanned game based on each other’s reactions. Two years ago I won the Royal Academy Prize with this work and a nomination as emerging artists at the photo museum winterthur in switzerland.

the next few days i will post fragments of this work.!
