the THE IMAGIST writes:
The decade is still fairly new (uhmmm like several months ) but it is certainly looking quite promising when it comes to the rise of new photographic talent. Will we see a 90's style explosion of a new breed of fashion imagists? The impending book by Daniel Sannwald, Pluto & Charon certainly feels like an audacious first offensive in the idea of a young photographer forging a signature style. Through his potent editorials in Dazed and Confused as well as 032c magazine and Vogue Hommes Japan you've gotten a taste of an aesthetic that flashes back to a kind of pre-WWII European instinct for experimental photography. Think the collage driven photographic forays of The Surrealists mixed with the mannered reductionism of Man Ray touched by the god lighting of Baron de Meyer. That 20's/30's enthusiasm for the new form of photography , which was then an innovative field marked by an absence of rules, is an instinct beautifully revived in the work of Mr Sannwald. For all the death drums beating for print, does anything look as sexy as the stacks of paper bearing the replicated images as they roll off a printing press? Carry on Daniel!
